Will Venom Deliver?

I’m surprised that I haven’t talked about the upcoming Venom movie yet, in part due to how excited I am for it, especially after watching the newest trailer. When I watched the teaser trailer, I didn’t really think too much of it, because there were just a bunch of disconnected sequences and little was seen of the actual symbiote. The other two trailers did eventually rectify this issue, especially the second one.

The first trailer really helps to make the disconnected scenes from the teaser trailer make a bit more sense by providing the basis of the narrative on which the movie is built. Of course the entire story isn’t revealed in the two-and-half minute trailer (or so I hope), but the premise of the movie is an interesting take on the Venom origin story, especially due to the lack of a Spider-Man.

The second trailer serves to show a bit more of the action, as well as the antagonists. One of the really interesting things about Venom is the fact that he isn’t really a villain, but he’s instead more of an anti-hero. Venom wants to protect the innocent, but unlike most heroes, he has no qualms with killing the guilty. Because of the tone of the movie set by these two trailers, I am very excited to see how it turns out.

Venom has been one of my favorite characters in the Marvel Universe for a long time, but the only movie adaptation that was ever done of him was in Spider-Man 3. Unfortunately, that movie did a rather mediocre job of portraying Venom, in part due to just how little screen time he received. Besides, there were all sorts of other little mistakes, such as Venom’s speech pattern (when referring to himself, Venom would say “I” as opposed to “we”) and his suit. However, Venom looks like it will be rectifying these issues, and I really hope that it does so well.

As for the villains in the movie, Venom will be going up against Carlton Drake and a few other symbiotes. I’m interested in seeing how this is going to go, because it looks as if the Venom Lethal Protector comic is being used to introduce Venom. If this is the case, then I’m curious if the two other symbiotes seen in the trailer will be considered the offspring of the Venom symbiote, or if they will just be found with the Venom symbiote. I’m personally hoping for the former since it will be more accurate to the source material, but I strongly suspect that it will be the latter due to the trailers. And since two symbiotes have been shown, it makes me wonder if the other three will make an appearance as well. Either way, I can’t way to see what happens.

I know that a lot of people want Carnage, Venom’s most infamous offspring, to show up in Venom, but I would actually prefer that they save him for a sequel. I think that if Carnage were to show up, the movie would become too cluttered with villains, and Spider-Man 3 shows what the consequences are when that happens. Besides, Carnage is easily my favorite villain in the Marvel Universe, so I really want him to be done well.

I’m excited for this movie, but I’m even more happy that it is even being made. I remember that shortly after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 there was supposed to be a Venom spin-off movie as well as a Sinister Six spin-off, but they never happened. So I just assumed that the Venom spin-off was dead, but I was pleasantly surprised when it was officially released. Initially, I was a little worried, and I still am, but I do think that Venom will be a good movie. Tom Hardy is a good actor, and from what I’ve seen in the trailers, I thin that he will do a good job as Eddie Brock.

Unfortunately, since there is so much hype around the movie, it has to be good. A common problem for movies and video games come from how much hype they generate. It’s easy for highly, highly anticipated movies and video games to develop impossible levels of hype, so much so that it ultimately ends up not doing as well as it probably would have had the hype not been as high. I think that the perfect example of this is Destiny or Destiny 2. Both games were highly anticipated and had incredible hype built up around them, but they ended up being incredibly controversial. They improved as time went on, but they still had to build up a lot due to how much disappointment there was due to hype. However, some movies and games do live up the hype, no matter how big. A perfect example is Avengers: Infinity War. The hype surrounding Infinity War was absolutely ridiculous, but it delivered. Because of that, I am somewhat worried for Venom, but from what I’ve seen in the trailers, I definitely think that the movie can deliver.
