My Thoughts on E3: Xbox Part 2

After discussing the updates to Xbox Game Pass, Flight Simulator was unveiled and shown off. I don’t play simulator games, so Flight Simulator had little appeal to me. However, I will say that graphically, the game did look very pretty.

The next game shown off was Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition. I know that this game is critically acclaimed, and here it is twenty years later finally getting a remaster. I’m relatively unacquainted with real-time strategy games (I’ve only ever played Halo Wars and Halo Wars 2), but the game looks pretty good.

Wasteland 3 was the next game shown off, and it looks fun enough. The trailer was pretty humorous and lighthearted as it sampled some of the chaos and destruction that you will be able to cause in a post-apocalyptic yet snowy Colorado. Overall, the game looks like it will be pretty fun, though again I’m pretty unfamiliar with the Wasteland series.

Psychonauts 2 was revealed after Wasteland 3, and even though I never played Psychonauts, I know that there are plenty of people that have been waiting for a sequel. The game looks very interesting, and I may consider picking it up myself if I can find a copy of the first game.

While, for the most part, I was relatively indifferent to the previous four games mentioned, the next game–LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga–really got my attention. Growing up, I have great memories of playing the LEGO Star Wars games with my friends, with my brother, and even with my dad. Those games were a great part of my childhood, and it has saddened me how in recent years, a lot of the newer LEGO games have seemed to lose the kind of charm that the first two LEGO Star Wars games had. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, however, might have recaptured that charm. In the trailer that we got at E3, not only did the game sport the classic LEGO game humor, the characters also only communicated through grunts. For me, this implies that the game will be similar in style to the more classic LEGO games, and I really like that. Besides, it doesn’t make sense to me to completely remake a solid 2/3 of that game since it already exists as LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga. Even though I haven’t truly played a LEGO game in years, my nostalgia for this one may force me to pick it up.

The next game that was shown off was Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, and this game looks sweet. I know that it’s kind of been done before, but I like the idea of a 3D Dragon Ball Z RPG, and the combat in the game looks very nice. This is definitely another game that I’ll be keeping an eye on in the future.

12 Minutes, the next game shown off, was the kind of indie or indielike game that I’d probably play. In 12 Minutes, you play as a man stuck in a time loop. The premise itself has been seen before in media like Groundhog Day, Happy Death Day, and a new Bethesda game that I’ll get to later in the week. However, I’m personally excited to see how this game turns out, especially because the 12 minutes of the time loop are supposed to be set in real time. That fact alone makes me even more interested in this already intriguing game.

Way to the Woods is similar to Spiritfarer in the sense that it’s a beautiful indie game, but it’s in a genre that I just don’t play. I know that some people will love Way to the Woods, and I did enjoy the trailer, but it’s just not for me. In the game, it looks like you play as a deer and must make your way to back to the woods with your child as you use your glowing antlers to navigate the dark and desolate world that you find yourself in.

The final game that I’ll be addressing today is Gears of War 5. I’ve never played any of the Gears games, so I can’t comment on the story related teaser shown off at E3, but I can comment on the multiplayer mode revealed. Gears 5 has some very promising new modes, such as the brand new Escape mode where you and two other teammates must work together to escape an enemy stronghold. From what was shown, the game looks pretty good, but again I can’t say much about the story, though studio head Rod Fergusson did say that the game will do things that haven’t been seen or done in a Gears game before. Either way, if you’re a fan of the Gears games, the newest one looks very promising.
