Destiny 2’s Heavy Metal Event Rocks

Destiny 2 just released its new “Heavy Metal” event, and it’s the first event in a while that’s remotely interesting. It’s no secret that Destiny 2‘s temporary events (The Dawning, Festival of the Lost, Guardian Games, and Solstice of Heroes) are mediocre at best, if not outright bad, and are usually the same boring gameplay loop every time they come back. Heavy Metal is different. It’s a limited 3v3 Crucible mode where one team pilots Drake Tanks and the other team pilots Fallen Brigs. The team that collects the most coins, which are generated when a player is defeated, wins. It’s a simple mode, but it’s fun and it’s different.

Each vehicle has a primary fire option, as well as a limited special attack that locks on and tracks targets. Collecting a coin, both from a defeated enemy or ally, refills a little of your health and restocks your special attack. Brigs also have a dash ability that can be used for evasion or traversal. The mode feels relatively balanced. Tanks might be a bit stronger than Brigs, but I have won as Brigs before.

Finally, there’s a free battle pass with exclusive rewards. You can complete daily and weekly challenges to progress the battle pass. There’s also a title to work towards acquiring. Overall, it’s a simple event, but far from bad. It provides enough little variance in the typical grind that it really is a breath of fresh air, and it’s a very arcadey mode that even when I’m losing, I’m enjoying it. If you’re still playing Destiny 2, it’s worth giving the Heavy Metal event a shot.
