This week I have a rather unorthodox review. When The Final Shape released back in June, I made sure to clear its raid Salvation’s Edge so that I could pick up the raid jacket. This is my fifth raid jacket I’ve purchased. Before I get into the review, I do want to address some common complaints leveled at Bungie and the Bungie Store. From what I’ve seen online, the store isn’t always the best at order fulfillment. I personally haven’t had any issues with my orders and their fulfillment. Sure, the jackets take months to arrive and there was one time when I was questioning whether or not I was actually going to get my jacket for Root of Nightmares, but it ultimately arrived just fine. All of that said, my point is that while I don’t discount complaints leveled at the Bungie Store and its delivery fulfillment, I personally haven’t had issues with it.
So let’s look at the jacket itself. The material quality is reminiscent of a rain jacket, but it still has some nice layering that will keep you warm when it’s cold outside. It’s not on the same level as the Deep Stone Crypt parka, which is my go-to jacket when it’s really cold since the thing is basically impenetrable to the cold, but the Salvation’s Edge jacket does a fine job keeping the cold out. It’s definitely a good jacket for fall and early/late winter.
Something fun with all of the jackets is that every one contains some little feature for practicality. For example, the Deep Stone Crypt parka is a parka and has a removable vest, and the Vow of the Disciple jacket is a general wear jacket with a hood you can zip away and hide. The main features present with this Salvation’s Edge jacket is its built-in fingerless gloves. It’s a cool little addition that adds to the jacket’s utility and aesthetic. The jacket sports two front pockets, a breast pocket, an internal pocket, and a pocket stretching across the back. The end result is a lot of pocket utility.
As for the aesthetic, the jacket is rather minimalist. It doesn’t have a whole lot going on, but it looks clean. The outside sports an orange line running around the arms and back that matches the resonance aesthetic of the raid it was earned from. It features three patches: the classic Destiny raid icon on one shoulder, a ship icon on the other shoulder, and Salvation’s Edge icon front and center. Surrounding the center icon are subtle etchings and geometric patterns. The inside features the symbol of the Witness, and it looks pretty good.
Overall, I do like this jacket, and the sevenish month wait was worth it. The jacket is stylish, comfortable, and practical. If I were to compare it with my other jackets, I’d put it solidly in the middle. I think that functionally, it’s on par with the rest of the jackets, and its minimalist aesthetic carves out a look for itself. I think it looks a bit better than the Vault of Glass and Vow of the Disciple jackets, but it’s just not as good looking, or effective, as the Deep Stone Crypt and Root of Nightmares jackets. The Salvation’s Edge jacket is good, and I’m glad I spent the money on it. It’s a cool memento, and a fitting trophy for conquering the hardest raid Destiny 2 had to offer.
